Chimerism, is the presence of cell populations with different genetic characteristics in one individual. The term is inspired by the mythical Chimera creature formed from parts of different animals. Acquired chimerism can result from organ or blood transplantation, stem cell treatment, or unusual combinations during fertilization, and acquired (developed after birth) chimerism may be temporary or permanent. This phenomenon is regarded as one of the historical foundations of the concept of organ transplantation.
