Eligibility for Kidney Transplantation

Kidney Transplant Eligibility Decision

After all examinations of the prospective kidney transplant recipient and donor have been completed, the Organ Transplantation Council, comprising authorized specialists from Nephrology, Immunology, Transplant Surgery, and Anesthesiology, makes a unanimous decision to approve or reject the operation. The main goal is to make the best decision and achieve the best possible outcome for both donor and recipient.

When a Decision of Suitability Is Made:

  • A transplantation date is scheduled.
  • The patient is admitted to hospital before transplantation and immunosuppressive medication is started.
  • Kidney transplantation is generally performed by transplant surgeons two to three days after admission.
  • After kidney transplantation, a hospital stay of five to seven days is typical under normal conditions.

During hospitalization, daily blood tests, urine output, and all organ systems are monitored, and medication doses are adjusted. Because intensive immunosuppressive treatment is given during this period, the patient must follow the clinic's rules and procedures to reduce the risk of infection.

Transplantation clinics restrict visitors to minimize infection risk.

For the donor, hospitalization usually begins one day before surgery, followed by approximately four days of postoperative observation in the clinic.
