Number of Patients on Organ Transplant Waiting Lists in Türkiye
The actual number of patients needing transplantation is estimated to be at least two to three times higher than the reported waiting-list figures. At the end of 2020, Türkiye had 60,558 patients receiving hemodialysis, 3,387 undergoing peritoneal dialysis, and 19,405 people who had received a kidney transplant as a result of chronic kidney failure, making a total of 83,350 people affected by chronic kidney disease. Unfortunately, more than 10,000 new patients are added to this group each year. It should be remembered that kidney and liver transplants can also be performed using living donors, whereas heart and lung transplants are performed using deceased donors.
